When Ninja Man suggested we get these “gourmet” sodas, I thought, “Oh no.” But that’s only because Ninja also likes gross things like licorice and green pea soup, but thank heavens, not together…

Anyway, apparently they only have these at Walgreens, so off we went in search of said “sodas.”

Now I must mention here, that I, as a born and bred southern belle, have never, ever called a drink a “soda”. Where I come from, we call everything “Cokes.”

“Let’s get a Coke” can mean anything that is vended from a fountain or sold icy cold from a cooler. Therefore, I wasn’t too excited about “soda”, especially “gourmet”, but when I saw them I had to try them.“They don’t have the high fructose corn syrup (hfcs, from here on out) that is such a problem for us,” Ninja coaxed. Yeah he knows how to get to me, alright. Ninja and I can just walk by hfcs and swell up. We gain weight when a Coke truck passes us on the highway.

In the fast lane.

So I figured I’d give it a shot. Wouldn’t you know, he would crack open a black cherry. I was not sure about that flavor at all, and was truly hoping we’d try the root beer. I gotta tell you, that black cherry was bombdiggity… it was really, really, really good. And at $1.50, it should be BUT if you have to have a “soda”, this one is better than the hfcs ones. We sipped it like two young lovers at the ice cream parlor. Ok, no we didn’t. I was driving and he kept having to hand me the bottle, so basically we swigged it like a couple of truckers on their day off.

Since the price and limited availability makes it a special treat drink, I decided to try the root beer in one of Ninja’s favorite glasses. (See the glass in both photos). This is one of two very thin, etched crystal glasses that I gave him for our 30th anniversary. I found them at the Paris Flea Market in Savannah, now known as the Paris Market and Brocante. I had $30 to spend and two of these glasses took every dime. For me, that is a pricey pair of glasses! They date back in the late 1800’s and Ninja loves old as well as fine glass, so he fell in love with these. We use them on very special occasions, like when drinking half of a $1.50 root beer. (By the way, half of the drink was just enough, and the screw-on caps means the rest will stay fresh.

So that’s the story of the gourmet sodas and a very fine glass. Cheers!
